Christmas Mantel

With Thanksgiving behind us, now is the time to put away the Thanksgiving decorations really get going on the Christmas ones.  Who am I kidding…I was so busy I didn’t decorate for Thanksgiving this year.  I just left up what I put out for autumn decorations and called it good.

So, I was ready for a change!  My daughter Christine helped me with all of this…something she does every year.  I really don’t have very many decorations so I picked up a few things from Kmart to add to what I already have.

I usually have a large clock hanging over the mantel but I put up this mirror instead.  I bought the mirror a few years ago from a garage sale for only $14.00!  The large snowflake hanging in the mirror is a gift I received one Christmas and I already had the stars and NOEL.

This pine cone topiary was made using a bowl I already had and cinnamon scented pine cones I purchased.  One of the high end online retailers sells similar pine cone topiaries for $110.00!

To make it, Christine put crumpled newspaper in the bottom and piled pine cones on top, using hot glue to keep them together.

I bought a trio of diagonal cut votive holders.  We filled them with icicles, bath salts & glitter and a silver bead garland.

I wrapped 3 small boxes and placed 2 on a vintage scale.  The other present we leaned up against the side.  I made the 2 sweater vases last year, using Stephanie Lynn’s tutorial. For the large vase, I purchase silver spiral stems.

Christine cut and arranged the curls and stems in the vase.

I put children’s Christmas books in the box on the right every year. I wanted to have a soft place for kids to sit and read a book.  So, I made this cushion.

I bought this blanket so that I could use the incredibly soft, fuzzy fabric on the inside for the cushion.  I already had the piece of thin foam, from another (unfinished) project, to use for the filling.  I folded and measured the foam.  Then, I cut (2) 14 1/2 x 41 inch pieces, (2) 4 x 14 1/2 inch pieces and (2) 4 x 41 inch pieces from the blanket.  I sewed the pieces together, leaving a fuzzy binding around the entire outside.  Thankfully, this fabric is very forgiving and hid my quick, unprofessional sewing job.  Before sewing on the final end, I slid the foam piece inside.  Then, I finished the sewing by hand.

We have this fireplace with some beautiful logs inside that I wanted to fill with candles.  I had 8 medium pillar candles already and I picked up 6 more from Kmart similar to these but without the wrap.  We arranged the candles and when we lit all of them they gave off such a warm glow!

Christine scattered a few extra pine cones on the mantel and it is all set!

One area of the house is done!  Next up?  My dining room!
