Have you ever checked out Horchow’s website? It is filled with fantastic home decor items that I love! The only problem is that I can’t afford them.
I’ve already made a couple of Horchow knockoffs so when I received a box from Elmer’s filled with these items and the challenge to create a Look For Less, I knew just where to go for inspiration! Here is a list of the items I received and this is the super exciting part…you can enter to win your own box of goodies from Elmer’s…see below for giveaway details!!
• Black 20×30 Foam Board
• 2 White 20×30 Foam Boards
• CraftBond All-Purpose Glue Stick
• CraftBond Repositionable Glue Stick
• CraftBond Extra Strength Glue Stick
• X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster Knife
• Painters Calligraphy Set
• Painters Craft Set
• Painters Assorted Colors Set
• $25 VISA gift card for other project supplies
I decided to make a Horchow Antique Rattan Suitcase for Elmer’s Looks For Less challenge. I used the 2 White 20×30 Elmer’s Foam Boards, CraftBond Extra Strength Glue Stick and X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster Knife to make my Looks For Less Burlap Suitcase. Plus, I purchased a few items and used other ones that I already had at home.
Supplies Needed:
- 2 White 20×30 Elmer’s Foam Boards (provided by Elmer’s $2.88)
- CraftBond Extra Strength Glue Stick (provided by Elmer’s $2.50)
- X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster Knife (provided by Elmer’s $5.00)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Packaging Tape
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glue Sticks for Hot Glue Gun $1.00
- 2 Yards Burlap $1.99/yd (50% off with coupon at Joann Fabrics)
- Wire Hanger
- Metal Key Hole $1.00 ($4.79 for 5 on sale at Joann Fabrics)
- 2 Mini Hinges $1.25 ($2.49 for 4 at True Value Hardware)
- 10 Brads
- 4 Grommets or Eyelets
- 4 Paper Clips
- Needle Nosed Pliers
- Spray Paint – Optional
Approximate Total Costs:
Looks For Less Burlap Suitcase: $7.23 ($20.49 w/o provided items)
Horchow Antique Rattan Suitcase: $475.00
Total Savings: $467.77 ($454.51 w/o provided items)
I measured, marked and cut out the following pieces from the Elmer’s Foam Board with the X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster Knife using a metal ruler at a guide.(2) 14 1/4″ x 12″
(2) 14 1/2″ x 4″
(2) 14 1/2″ x 3″
(2) 12″ x 4″
(2) 12″ x 3″
I used the Elmer’s CraftBond Extra Strength Glue Stick to hold the sides together. Then, I used the packaging tape to secure the edges on the outside and inside of the boxes.
I purchased sage burlap and it didn’t look good over the white box. So, I spray painted the boxes a light gray color.
I cut 2 pieces of burlap so they will cover the box pieces and overlap to the inside. I cut a small tab on the right side of each burlap flap. Attach the pieces with hot glue. Make sure the small tab is tucked under the side flap. Then, glue pieces of burlap onto the bottom of the box pieces.
Then, using the brads, I attached the hinges and the keyhole. I inserted the grommets/eyelets, gluing them in place. Then, I unbent the hanger and formed handles with the help of a needle nose pliers.
I opened up 4 paperclips, inserted them through the grommet/eyelet hole, spread the ends apart like a brad, hooked the handle through the loops and closed the loop of small hanger wire that was looped through the paper clip loops.
Then, I found a couple of keys from my scrapbooking supplies and hung them from the lower handle.
