With less than 1 week till Mother’s Day, it’s crunch time for figuring out those Mother’s Day gifts.  Both my mom and my mother-in-law love flowers so that is what we usually get them for Mother’s Day.  Some years we pick out the flowers and other years we give them gift cards so they can pick out their own.  This year I decided to decorate pots with Painters Paint Markers and then plant some flowers in the pots as part of their gifts.

I was inspired by the herringbone dresser that Stephanie from Henry Happened recently posted as part of her nursery for her new baby.  So, I picked up the Painter Paint Markers and the pots from a recently trip to Walmart.  There were several choices of packs of Painters Paint Markers but I wanted colors that weren’t included in the packs so I choose so of the ones that were sold individually.  They are only $1.97 each at Walmart…that is the new, everyday price!  Plus they have an even bigger selection than before.  Vanessa helped me choose the colors.

Once home, I gathered the supplies, headed outside and started painting!  I wasn’t sure which colors would look good together but I had a big variety of colors to choose from!

I started by drawing vertical lines around the pot.  I wanted a haphazard or handmade feel to the herringbone pattern so I just drew the lines freehand making the spaces between vary in size.  There were 20 vertical lines on each pot.

Then, I started painting on the diagonal lines.  Again, I did them so that the spaces between varied as well as the diagonal slant.  I changed the paint marker color every 2 spaces, switching between 2 colors.  I love using Painters Paint Markers, as I am sure you can tell from other posts I’ve done, because they are so convenient to use for drawing lines or details.  The paint does dry fairly quickly but it is still paint so if you aren’t careful, you might end up with some paint on your hands and fingers like I did.  If I am painting a larger surface I will use a paint brush but for project like this Painters Paint Markers are my favorite!

I love how they turned out and now we just need to get some flowers in them!

yellow flowers

Vanessa helped me pick out the flowers.  We choose blue and white flowers for one pot and yellow and white for the other pot.  I do not have a green thumb by any stretch of the imagination so picking the flowers took us quite while because we had to make sure they were a good fit height wise and that they could both tolerate the sun!

planting flowers in pots

Vanessa loves this kind of thing so she was really happy that I waited for her to be able to help me!  We put some rocks in the bottom of the pots for drainage and then added the dirt and flowers.

They look a tad bit dismal right now because we just planted them but they will perk up in time for Mother’s Day!

Are you making any Mother’s Day gifts this year?

They came out great! Terrific idea although my free hand drawing on pots probably would have been disasterous! LOl

What a simple way to really spruce up simple pots! I love the way it turned out! Now that we have a deck/porch, I might get into plants… I definitely want to do this to our pots!
